Carbon steel is made up of iron and carbon. Plain carbon steel is best because it is free from aluminum, manganese, sulphur, etc that does not enhance its quality but decreases it. These elements are considered impurities if added. Carbon steel based on its classification is low carbon steel, mild carbon steel, and high carbon steel. The carbon content in low carbon steel ranges from 0.05 to 0.30. In high carbon steel, the carbon content ranges from 0.60 to 1.5. However, in mild carbon steel, the carbon content ranges from 0.30 to 0.60. Low carbon steel is used mainly in industrial areas. Low carbon steel is ductile, soft and any welding process can be carried out in low carbon steel. Mild carbon steel can be tempered and hardened easily. It is used in making products with high strength, forging, connecting rods, etc. High carbon steel has more toughness, is wear-resistant and its properties can be enhanced by heating it. High carbon steel is used in cutting tools, forging tools, high strength bars, and wires.
