Cerrosafe
is a fusible alloy with a low melting point. It consists of the following
components:

Bismuth: 42.5%

Lead: 37.7%

Tin: 11.3%

Cadmium: 8.5%

This unique alloy melts between 158°F (70°C) and 190°F (88°C). Its
properties make it particularly useful for creating reference castings. These
castings allow for precise correlation of dimensions with those of the mold or
other templates due to Cerrosafe’s
well-known thermal expansion properties during cooling.

Here’s how it works:

1) Upon cooling, the alloy contracts during the first 30 minutes, making
it easy to remove from a mold.

2) It then expands during the next 30 minutes, returning to its exact
original size.

3) Over the next 200 hours, it continues expanding at a known rate,
allowing for accurate conversion of measurements from the casting back to those
of the mold12.

alloys for chamber molding have a melting point between 70 and 90°C and are
used to make impressions of barrel chambers, muzzles, and barrels.
